Croatia

The long-standing tradition of construction in Croatia is characterised with rich experience and workforce skills in using state-of-the- art equipment, materialsand organisational concepts. In addition, Croatian construction companies work on building sites globally, where, by constructing the most complex of buildings, they have demonstrated their capacity to meet all demands made upon them by investors. Croatian construction companies have earned an enviable reputation by meeting deadlines and highstandards in performing various tasks and constructing a variety of buildings: geotechnical engineering, industrial plants, power facilities and also hydraulic structures, transport infrastructure, residential and commercial buildings. A great achievement at a global level is the well-known bridge between the island of Krk and the mainland, built in 1980, which, until recently (1997), was the largest arch in the world made of reinforced
concrete (length: 390 m).

Greece

The government traditionally has seen the construction sector as a way to boost employment, income, and domestic demand. Accordingly, the housing construction industry has historically enjoyed tax advantages. However, with the fiscally conservative policies of the 1990s, increased taxation was considered. The construction of large public works has also played a significant role in this subsector of the economy. The new international airport in Athens was a major construction project planned by the government. The first passenger flights took off in March 2001 and the government hopes the airport will become a regional hub for routes to Europe, Africa, and Asia. With its state-ofthe-art facilities, the new airport is expected to boost the tourism sector and handle the tourist traffic demands of the 2004 Olympic Games, which will be held in Athens. The $1 billion construction project involved both Greek and foreign private companies and the Greek public sector. Attiki Odos, a conglomerate of Greek construction companies, constructed a high-speed toll roadway, and plans are underway to build new hotels near the airport.

Macedonia

Macedonia has a real expertise in construction. For decades, large Macedonian construction companies have completed large construction and civil engineering projects in the whole region. The country is a major supplier of construction labor to Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Russia. The percentage of the projects undertaken abroad of the Macedonian construction companies in 2009, is slightly increased compared to 2008. Construction activities in Macedonia in 2009 compared to 2008 are decreased due to the limited economic development over the past years, but perspectives are very positive and construction companies have now started stirring up the interest of large foreign investors. In the first quarter of 2010, the construction industry contributes 7.7 % of the country’s GDP. There is a dynamic local construction material industry producing cement, tiles, sanitary ware, gypsum and associated products.

Serbia

The construction industry has shown continuing growth in the past few years, especially in Serbia’s three largest cities: Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis. Valued by the amount of projects completed, it recorded 9.5% increase in 2008 compared to 2007. In 2007, most completed projects included transportation infrastructure (34%), commercial space (26%) and residential space (24%). Building and Construction Industry in former Yugoslavia contributed up to 10% of gross domestic product, which makes a significant contribution to the economic development of a country. Building and Construction Industry organisations were doing their business internationally which included both building and construction and service activities. Thus, exporting became the industry’s core competence
